Do I Need a Skip License?

Before putting a skip on a public road, i.e., a street, a road, pavement, or highway, you are under obligation to obtain a skip hiring permit first. This hiring permit is also known as a skip license. If you put a skip out on the road without a permit, the council or other authorities can remove it without notice.

The worst part is that you may be liable to pay a fine. However, if your property has enough private space to keep a skip on it, there is no need to obtain a permit. For instance, you have a driveway or a front garden that falls within the boundaries of your home.

Contact Your Council for a Skip Permit

You can always get a skip permit from the local council in your area. Most council in the UK allows the skip hire companies to apply for a skip license on your behalf. However, a few may require you to hire a skip to put in an application yourself.

Therefore, you must check with our local council to learn about their skip license issuance policy rules. It can take you four days or more to receive your skip permit; therefore, remember to arrange the permit before you give out a date to the skip hire company to deliver it to your doorstep.

The Duration of a Skip License

Like any other permit or license, your skip permit has an expiration date as well. Your skip permit is valid only for 14 days or two weeks from the date of its issuance. Most council does allow extension of this initial period of the permit. However, you will have to pay an additional fee when applying for an extension of your skip license.

In case you fail to get an extension on your permit and keep the skip without a permit, you might have to pay a hefty fine as a penalty.

The Cost of Skip License

The cost of obtaining a skip license varies depending on which part of the country you live in. Plus, the duration for which you wish to keep the skip on the public road will be the most crucial factor in deciding the price you pay for the permit.

You can get a skip license for a week, two weeks, or even a month and even renew them as far as you pay additional charges for extending their validity. That said, on average, a skip permit will cost you somewhere around £30.

However, bear in mind that a skip hiring company will also charge you a small mark-up on the cost of your permit if they are applying on your behalf. This is their administrative fee for taking care of all the paperwork for you.
